Tom Branson's own mother thinks he's a fool. This doesn't bother him too much, but it's probably worth noting.

At the moment (1914), he makes his living as a chauffeur on the Downton Abbey estate. He's a bit of a radical, or his employees think so. A socialist, with Marxist tendencies, he's watching the revolutionary rumblings in Russia with distinct interest. He's only just taken the job, and while he does miss Ireland a bit, he doesn't particularly miss his last job. The mistress was very nice, but she only had one car, and she never let him go faster than 20 miles an hour. Downton is much more to his liking.

(And if he spends a little more time than is strictly respectable with Lady Sybil Crawley, well...who could blame him?)
